Our work in Tanzania centered on Bagamoyo, a coastal community about one hour from the capital, Dar es Salaam. Our interviews extended into even more rural areas, however, as we sought to meet women from Kiwangwa, a pineapple-producing village, and nomadic women of the Wamangati tribe.

Our contact there was Terri Place, the founder and director of a babies’ home (The Baobab Home), who offered her help in contacting women and providing translation. Many of the interviews told of the profound impact of HIV/AIDS on rural Tanzanian women and the dramatic changes a road can bring.
